Walking Holidays Dordogne

River Walking in South France

Known locally as “Périgord”, the Dordogne “département”, in France is named after the most important of the region’s seven rivers and is the perfect backdrop for your walking holiday. The area is also called the “Land of the 1001 sites” and to walk here is to travel through time.

With plunging, green valleys dwarfed by dramatic peaks, and winding rivers edged by picturesque villages, the Dordogne is a region that naturally attracts walkers. This is a destination that evokes a bygone era, where rural living and a relaxed pace of life are embraced by locals and visitors alike. Visit here and discover the best the region has to offer with more than 1,500 castles dotted around the area.

The Dordogne province shares its name with the river that cuts through the heart of the region, and the walking paths that follow this winding course unveil scenes of exceptional beauty. With much of the Dordogne rich with fertile land, a gentle stroll is certain to reward. Enjoy the stunning limestone cliff faces that line the meandering river and present the perfect opportunity to savour spectacular views that only nature could create.

When you need a rest know that the area is also famed for gastronomy and you can enjoy a Perigord feast washed down with a fine Cahors or Bergerac wine! Try the gourmet fare of foie gras, truffles, confit d’oie, cabecou cheese or walnut liqueur. Too delicious! And then come home to your tranquil place of rest at Las Vignotes de Lea for a relaxing evening swim to recover for your exploits the next day.

Medieval Charms

A walking holiday in the Dordogne reveals a world of medieval villages and castles that have endured for centuries and which enjoy commanding views of the surrounding landscapes. A must see is Sarlat – the medieval capital of the Dordogne – and one of my favourite places in the world to spend an afternoon. Before setting off for your walk around Sarlat, visit the tourist office which can provide a suggested walking tour to take in the key attractions. The tourist information office is near to the cathedral.

Broadly, the pedestrianised Rue de la Republique runs the length of the old town, with mazes of narrow streets either side. The cathedral is to the south-east of Sarlat, with the attractive Place de Payrou and Hotel de la Boétie. North east is the lovely Place de la Liberté and the wonderful winding street of the Rue des Consuls.

Market day in Sarlat is Saturday and Wednesday. Sarlat also has a Christmas fair in December with around 40 wooden chalets selling arts and crafts and there is also an outdoor ice-rink.
